The goal of the FOCUS acquisition exhibition is to present the artists of a younger and middle generation whose works were added to the gallery collection fund over the period of the last two years. We specifically concentrate on artists whose work has never been a part of the gallery fund before.
The goal of the FOCUS acquisition exhibition is to present the artists of a younger and middle generation whose works were added to the gallery collection fund over the period of the last two years. We specifically concentrate on artists whose work has never been a part of the gallery fund before. Strategically, the acquisitions were supposed to enrich our print fund (Palo Čejka, Tomáš Klepoch) and photography and other media fund (András Cséfalvay, Lucia Papčová), which is the thinnest collection fund the gallery owns at the moment. The goal of our acquisitions is to create a professionally selected collection of contemporary Slovak fine art, which is in line with the science and research assignments (expositions and publishing) of Nitra Gallery.
One of the key professional duties of Nitra Gallery is to collect, preserve, present, manage and protect the cultural heritage of all of the fine art disciplines of the visual art of the 20th and 21st centuries. This approach toward our acquisition policy has been developed by and based on the professional work of the curators and custodians of Nitra Gallery. Creating a collection of modern and contemporary art is one of the key goals of the gallery. By acquiring these pieces of art, researching them, interpreting them and putting them on display, we are able to present our visitors with a visually attractive view of the different stages of development of our art.
András Cséfalvay (1986): graduated from Newcastle University in fine art in 2008. In 2011, he received a masters degree at AFAD in Bratislava (under Daniel Fischer). Later, he also received a doctoral degree and currently teaches at the Department of Intermedia. Cséfalvay’s films have been presented at many festivals: Early Melons in Bratislava, Cinematik in Piešťany, PAF13 in Olomouc and others. His works can be also found at Slovak National Gallery, Nitra Gallery, but also Malmö Konstmuseum. He focuses on experimental films and 3D animation.
Palo Čejka (1973): started his AFAD studies under Milota Havránková (1992) and finished them at the Department of Design at Ľubomír Longauer’s studio (1998). He works on photography, printmaking, illustrations and graphic design. He enjoys experimenting with various techniques (linocut, woodcut, relief printing). He is a singer and songwriter of the Kamoško a Kokosko band, a host, poet, teacher. He is a representative of the so-called “Rough School” (the term was used by A. Kusá in 2017 at SNG at an exhibition of the same name).
Tomáš Klepoch (1981): studied at AFAD (Robert Jančovič, Ivan Csudai, Pavel Choma). He works on prints, illustrations and graphic design. His projects are presented both at home and internationally, he also participates at group events. He mostly focuses on books. He has received several awards for illustrations and book design (e.g. Golden Apple Illustration Biennial Bratislava, the Most Beautiful Book of the Winter). Besides being an active artist, he also teaches. He is a representative of the “Rough School”.
Lucia Papčová (1987): received her bachelor degree at AFAD in Bratislava at Filip Vančo’s studio. From 2009 to 2010, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Vladimír Skrepl and Jiří Kovanda). Subsequently, she received her masters degree at Akademie der bildenden Kunste in Vienna. In 2018, she finished her doctoral degree at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. She received an Essl Award VIG during her bachelor studies. She has taken several residencies abroad. At the moment, she focuses mainly on large-format photography.
